Thoughts & Feelings: Starting a New Job

I recently started my first “big girl” job (going on week 3). So now that I’m a seasoned vet, I wanted to share some of my first thoughts and feelings about new beginnings (career wise).

1. Butterflies in your tum tum

I think everyone goes through this phase, right….? Starting your first day is a little nerve-wracking. Especially when it’s your first full-time job, and you don’t really know what it’s like to be an actual employee. Doubts start sinking into your mind: will my team like me? will I be able to keep up? will I like my job?!

2. Super excited

After the nerves pass, you start to get excited about all the possibilities! New friends, new work environment, and lots of learning are in your future.

3. A teensy bit overwhelmed

You’ll be trained (hopefully), and then it’s off to fulfill your duties. It’s easy to feel a little bit overwhelmed with all of your new responsibilities. But don’t worry, because you’ll totally get the hand of it!

4. Realizing you’re a perfect fit

Hopefully as time goes on you’ll see that you’re a perfect fit for the company, on your team, and in your role!

Tell me about your first few weeks at a job!

Happy fall ya’ll! I had another awesome Chi-town weekend with my some of my favorite people 🙂

* Caturday snuggle seshes are my new favorite things. Luna likes to cuddle for a solid 5 minutes and then she peaces out.

* Logan and I went to J.P. Burke’s for a little date night. We devoured that giant pretzel, along with our tasty beers in a matter of minutes #sorrynotsorry

* The Chicago Farmers Market on Satuday mornings in Lincoln Park is always the #1 place to dog watch. So many pooches! Oh yeah, and so many free samps.

* The weather this past weekend was fantastic! We had to hop off our bikes and snap this quick pic by this little pond in Lincoln Park

What’d you do this weekend?

Currently Craving: Desk Trinkets

Hey guys! I started my first “big girl” job two weeks ago, and I’m desperately searching for little trinkets to make my desk area feel more like “my space.” The agency I work for is following the open workspace trend, so no cubicle for me!

1. I’d use this awesome mug to hold pens, pencils, and other random office supplies. I work in a chill place, so I don’t think the language on the mug would be an issue.

2. How cute are these tiny elephant phone holders?! Definitely a great way to add a pop of color to my little work space.

3. Love, love, love this little photo holder. I think I’ll order prints of some of my favorite instagram photos.

4. This floral calendar desk pad would add a nice feminine feel to my lil area, dontchya think?

What little items do you use to spruce up your work area?

Liebster Award

Hello homies! And HAPPY FRIDAY! The other day I was lucky enough to be nominated by Little Letters Big Words for a little blogger award called the Liebster Award (Thanks girl!). So this award is just to help other little bloggers get to know each other and maybe find some more blogs to follow (you can never read enough, right?)

Once nominated:

  1. Thank the writer who nominated you, link to their blog in your post.
  2. Display the award.
  3. Answer the nominators 10 questions.
  4. Nominate other blogs of your choice and provide the creators of those blogs with 10 questions, so that you (and others) can get to know those authors better.
  5. Notify the blog creators of their nomination.

The questions I was asked:

What are three words that describe you?
Curious, Chill, and Adventurous

If you could live anywhere in the world, where would you choose and why?
I would live in Chicago (where I’m currently living). I lived in Madrid last year and traveled through Europe. While foreign cities are beautiful and exciting, there’s nothing quite like living in your home country.

Where is your hometown, and what is the best thing about it?
My hometown is Aurora, IL. It’s a basic suburb, but the best thing about it is that there is a TON of shopping. We have a couple malls, and lots of strip malls – it was definitely where all my lifeguard earnings were spent.

How do you define happiness?
Being content in your life. I’ve been pretty lucky and have had a very fulfilled life already. I’ve been able to travel the world, I have amazing relationships, and I just started my first “big girl” job! #blessed

If you could change one thing in the world, what would it be?
Equality. The inequality gap is ridiculous: whether it’s economic, gender, sexuality, nationality, etc – there shouldn’t be such an enormous difference in quality of life between people of different backgrounds.

Where is your favorite coffee spot?
The Sweetspot! It’s a coffee shop in my college town, so it holds a lot of sentimental value for me.

Why did you begin writing/ blogging?
I’ve always enjoyed writing, and when I started reading lifestyle/fashion blogs in 2010, I knew I had to start my own. I think it’s so cool to be able to get a little glimpse into other people’s lives.

What is your favorite dish?
My favorite food is probably a Spanish tapa plate. This dish usually has chorizo, jamon, manchego (cheese), all atop a freshly baked baguette. Talk about mouth watering.

If you could visit any era, when would you choose and why?
I think the late 60s would be a cool era to visit. The time of the hippies, free love, and rock and roll. Also, it’d be cool to meet my parents who were in their teens at this time, I wonder if I’d like them… haha

What is your favorite quote and why?
“The more that you read, the more things you will know. The more that you learn, the more places you’ll go.” — Dr. Seuss

I nominate Abbey Kay & A Modest Fashion Blog & Peachy Style

And my questions are…

  1. What’s your favorite article of clothing?
  2. Your favorite fall memory?
  3. If you could be an animal, what would you be and why?
  4. What’s your Starbucks order?
  5. What’s your biggest passion?
  6. Who’s been the biggest influence on your life?
  7. What is your all time favorite TV show?
  8. What’s the best/favorite accessory you own?
  9. Describe yourself in 3 words.
  10. What was the last dream you remember?

I’m excited to read your answers!

Thoughts & Feelings: Favorite Fall Memories

Like most people, I am completely obsessed with fall! The crisp autumn air, layering scarves & sweaters, warm soups, the changing leaves, how could you not love this season? As I’ve said before, I’m a fairly nostalgic person, so as this new season begins I can’t help but look back at some of my all-time favorite fall memories.

* During my first fall in college my siblings and I came home for my mom’s birthday & went on a photo shoot for her present (she LOVED it). I still love looking back at these awesome pictures of all of us together!

* The boyfriend and I started a fall date tradition of apple picking back in 2009, and we’ve done it ever since! We used to go to this little apple orchard in a Wisconsin town close to our college, but now that we aren’t going to school in Whitewater we’ll have to find a new place to get our pickin on!

* Another autumn tradition during the college years was coming down to Chicago to visit my sister for the weekend. We always did lots of fall activities (coffee shop hopping, baking, shopping, and Halloween parties galore). There’s nothing quite like fall in the city.

* Friendsgiving! We were a little ahead of the popularity curve of this event, because we started planning Friendsgivings in 2009, and have continued celebrating it with our high school buddies ever since. Since we’ve all grown up and gone our separate ways it’s really nice to have a day where we can all catch up.

What are some of your favorite fall memories?

Another great weekend for the books!

* On Friday we went to Whole Foods 5 for 5 deal (5 apps, 5 wine pairings, for $5)!

* My fam fam came down to Chi-town so we all had a delicious lunch together at Wilde

* SURPRISE! We shouted that at our friends surprise party, yeah – she cried

* The sister & I stocked up on Trader Joe’s snacks and watched the bears lose

What’d you do last weekend?

Currently Craving: Junk (drunk) Food

Hello world, as you can probably tell from these photos I had a good time last night. However, my intoxicating evening activities have lead me to the woes that are hangover cravings. Tell me I’m not alone! While you’re at it, please give me all of the greasy, cheesy, tasty foods!

1. Portillos Italian Beef sounds heavenly right now. Only you Illinois folks will understand the glory that is Portillos.

2. Pass me some chips and let me go to town on a delish 7 layer dip!

3. Another Chicago classic, DEEP DISH! Warm cheesy goodness get in my belly.

4. What sounds better than a mouthwatering mega burger and fries? Nothing.

5. Living in Wisconsin for 3 years ruined me by introducing me to cheese curds. Think mozzarella sticks, but infinitely better.

6. Pretzel bites with some cheese dip are screaming my name right now! PLZ GIMME

What are your favorite hangover foods?!

My Instagram vs. My Reality

Everyone knows Instagram feeds are highlight reels of people’s lives. I mean, come on, any app where you can photoshop the shit out of a PSL to make it look like a life changing beverage is bound to be a little misleading.

And after reading this article comparing an Instagram post to reality I was dying to write my own!

1. I workout & look cool while doing it

Screen Shot 2015-09-16 at 10.08.38 PM

Check me out! I run, I have cool shoes, and what’s that? a sexy city skyline? You can bet I’ve been more productive than you this morning and I feel GREAT about it!

Half way through my run I get a bad side cramp and have to catch my breath. Right as I’m gaining my strength back and mental resilience to complete my minuscule run at snail speed, I realize there’s a pretty good backdrop for an insta.

2. The glam selfie shot

Screen Shot 2015-09-16 at 10.06.46 PM

Look at me y’all, I’m naturally beautiful and have cool eyes. Also my hair is looking like a beautiful mermaid’s.

I just finished an interview and was using my front facing camera to make sure I didn’t have a booger on my face or something. Decided the lighting looked good, and after some editing, voila!

3. I go to really cool places

Screen Shot 2015-09-16 at 10.05.52 PM

Check out this cool hipster bar that has neat wall art. Also, admire my tasty ass beverage. I obviously exclusively drink craft beer.

My friends were judging me for taking this & since I had to hold my beer up for the pic everyone at the bar probably thought I was a photo obsessed lunatic.

While Instagram isn’t a perfect representation of my life, I do think it’s a fun way to keep track of some small moments and make them seem a little grander. P.S. you can follow my tiny adventures on instagram here.

How was your weekend?

The Truth Behind Cohabiting

The boyfriend and I have been together for over 6 years now, WOAH! We’re going on year two of living together, but only a few months into living together sans roomies. When you live with your significant other you learn a lot about them: the good the bad, and the ugly. I wanted to share some little lessons I’ve learned from living with my main squeeze.

You will have really dumb disagreements

Recent arguments include: who fills the britta pitcher up more often, where we should put a picture on our collage wall, and if stevia is better than sweet and low. Remember to compromise, and play fair. One person can’t be the one who makes all the sacrifices. You both gotta win, and you both gotta lose #dealwithit.

Separation of chores comes kind of naturally

I make the bed, he takes out the trash. We  have to try to stay away from the whole 1:1 chores ratio because it’s really easy to get into that which can lead to some pissy pants feelings. I just try to remember we’re both trying to take care of our home, and we each have a preference for which tasks to do. And not all chores are created equal.

Boys eat a lot

The boyfriend and I have started buying our groceries together. Holy sh*t can that boy eat! I’m still working on keeping my annoyance at bay when I realize he’s eaten all the deli meat. I guess you should try to remember different people need different amounts of food, and my 6’4″ 195 lbs boyfriends needs more food than me.

You don’t have to worry about one person leaving

This sentence carries a lot of weight. Living together means an even deeper level of commitment (1 year lease, am I right?). It also means you get to do the hang thing every night! Waking up next to your person is awesome, and no one ever has to leave to go back to their place.

Living together is really fun, and really different. But most of all, it’s really great.
